You may not want to read some of the other children's stories. Some are happy, and some are sad. Totally up to you. I wanted everyone to know and understand the seriousness of this illness even though I know in my heart everything is going to work out with a positive outcome for Nathen.
Other Children's Stories on Neuroblastoma:
Foundations & Organizations
- Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer in children.
- Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer in infancy.
- Neuroblastoma is the most common extra cranial solid tumor cancer
in children.
- Every 16 hours a child with neuroblastoma dies.
- There is no known cure for neuroblastoma.
- Nearly 70% of those children first diagnosed, have disease that has
already metastasized or spread to other parts of the body. When
disease has spread at diagnosis and a child is over the age of 2 there
is less than a 30% chance of survival.
- Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in the US
and it kills more children per year than cystic fibrosis, muscular
dystrophy, asthma and AIDS combined.
- There is NO direct government funded research into Neuroblastoma
and drug companies only fund research into diseases that will make
profitable returns for their share holders. Neuroblastoma is not one of
those diseases!

Neuroblastoma, Childhood
Neuroblastoma is a solid cancerous tumor that forms in nerve cells of infants and young children. Neuroblastoma can start in nerve tissues of the neck, chest, abdomen, or pelvis, but it most often begins in the tissues of the adrenal gland, situated on top of the kidney. The adrenal glands produce hormones that help control body functions, such as heart rate and blood pressure.
Neuroblasts are immature nerve cells found in unborn babies. Normal neuroblasts mature into nerve cells or adrenal medulla cells (cells found in the center of the adrenal gland). Neuroblastoma forms when neuroblasts don't mature properly.
Sometimes, babies are born with small masses of neuroblasts that eventually mature into nerve cells and do not become cancer. Neuroblasts that do not mature sometimes continue to grow and then form tumors. In other cases, some tumors formed from neuroblasts fail to grow.
Neuroblastoma develops most often in infants and children younger than five years old. A neuroblastoma can form before the baby is born and can sometimes be detected during a prenatal ultrasound examination. Most often, however, neuroblastoma is detected only after the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, liver, lungs, bones, and bone marrow.
